Our Club Colours

The Moorabbin Kangaroos proudly wear Deep Navy Blue, White, and Light Blue — inspired by the AFL’s North Melbourne Kangaroos.

Club History

The Moorabbin Kangaroos Football Club, now playing at Widdop Crescent in Hampton East, has a history distinct from the earlier VFL club of the same name. The club is the product of a 1970s merger and, after a turbulent period in the 1980s, has established itself as a resilient community club within the Southern Football Netball League.

Origins: The Merger of Two Rivals

The modern Moorabbin Kangaroos were formed in 1978 through the merger of two neighbouring clubs from the Federal Football League (FFL):

The new amalgamated club adopted the name, royal blue and white colours, and “Kangaroos” nickname of the original, successful Moorabbin club that had disbanded in 1965. Initially competing in the FFL until its collapse in 1981, the club moved to the South East Suburban Football League (the precursor to today’s SFNL) for the 1982 season.

The VFA Years and Collapse (1983–1987)

Seeking a higher standard of competition, the club was admitted to the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1983, initially playing under the name Moorabbin West.

The club competed in the VFA’s second division for four seasons, with its best year coming in 1985 after recruiting champion goalkicker Fred Cook. However, the club narrowly missed the finals that year.

The Moorabbin VFA side met a sudden and dramatic end in 1987. After just two matches, coach Graham Stewart resigned following a dispute with the club board, leading to a mass walkout of players. Unable to field a team, the club was suspended by the VFA and subsequently folded mid-season.

Rebirth and a New Home in the SFNL

Following the VFA side’s collapse, Geoff Burke was the catalyst for the club’s rebirth. Widely regarded as the father of the modern Moorabbin Kangaroos, Burke served as club President for several years and was instrumental in re-forming the club and securing its permanent home in the Southern Football League. By the early 1990s, the club had settled at its current ground, A.W. Oliver Reserve on Widdop Crescent in Hampton East, and officially changed its name to the Moorabbin Kangaroos in 2003.

This era has been defined by the club’s success on the field and its resilience off it. The Kangaroos have won three senior premierships in the Southern Football Netball League (SFNL):

A Legacy of Community Resilience

The club’s history in the SFNL is notable not just for its premierships, but for its survival against the odds. A central figure in this story is Margaret Torpy, who joined the then-Moorabbin West club in 1987 and has served in countless official roles, including secretary and treasurer, for decades.

In recognition of her efforts, Torpy was the first woman inducted into the SFNL Hall of Fame. She was instrumental in saving the club from folding on two separate occasions — first in 2009 and again in 2015 — by forming new committees to steer the club forward.

Today, the Moorabbin Kangaroos continue to be a vibrant part of the Hampton East community, fielding senior and reserve teams and hosting community events at Widdop Crescent, such as their annual Indigenous Game.

Club Song

Listen to the Club Song

Hearts to hearts and hands to hands, Beneath the blue and white we stand. We shout, God bless our native land, Moorabbin, Moorabbin.

Out we come, out we come, out we come to play, Just for recreation’s sake, to pass the time away. Lots of fun, heaps of fun, enjoy yourself today. Moorabbin boys/girls are hard to beat when they come out to play.

So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all, Join in the chorus, Moorabbin’s on the ball. Good old Moorabbin, they’re champions you’ll agree. Moorabbin is the team that plays to win for you and me.
